Newark CSO

Under the direct supervision of the Rutgers University Police Department - Newark Division, Community Service Officers act as the "eyes and ears" of the Police Department and have been doing so since 2004 when the program took root at Rutgers University—Newark.

Students Serving Students

Community Service Officers are unarmed uniformed students at Rutgers-Newark who perform routine patrols around the premises on foot, bicycle, Segway, and our newest addition, the T-3 Motion. Additionally, Community Service Officers execute a variety of duties, while on patrol, to maintain and preserve a high level of safety within the Rutgers University-Newark Community such as; conducting building checks, vehicle lock-outs and jumpstarts, providing escort services and security for special events such as Commencement and Rutgers sporting events.

Students involved in this program are granted the opportunity to complete certifications in First Aid, CPR, & Defensive Driving through an extensive forty-hour academy training specifically addressing the security concerns of New Jersey Colleges and Universities. Through the knowledge of professional Law Enforcement personnel, Community Service Officers become skilled in various public safety-related topics including New Jersey criminal law, issues of substance abuse, and cultural diversity. They also receive on-campus training adequately addressing the safety concerns of Rutgers University-Newark. The primary responsibilities of these proactive student workers are to observe, identify, and describe situations to the police department that pose a threat to public safety and university policy.
